September 14, 2023
Dear PS/IS 229 students, families, staff, and alumni,
First, let me begin by saying, “Thank you!!!” Through good times and more difficult times, you all have continued to be the rock that the foundation of this school community is built upon.
Speaking of foundations… it was a long and challenging three years since the scaffolding and sidewalk shedding went up in December of 2019. After some much needed roofing, façade, and foundation repair, the building boldly shines again in all its glory. After the contractors finished landscaping, some of our students and teachers put in some work of their own, beautifying the grounds surrounding the school. With an assist from the NIA, PTA, custodial staff and AP Cuthill, we now have a school building and grounds second-to-none!
In addition to the long construction/renovation project, we also had a pandemic to contend with. Once again, parents/guardians, students, staff, and the community rose to the occasion. We supported, cared for, and comforted one another as true members of a family would. We have much to be proud of and much to celebrate!
We are planning to celebrate with a “Grand Reopening” on Saturday, October 7th, 2023. All families of current students and alumni, along with retired staff members are invited to join us this day for the following:
10:00 – 10:30 AM Rededication of the grounds and newly planted trees in honor of students and staff we lost some time ago and more recently.
10:30 – 11:00 AM Guided tours of the “new” building and grounds.
11:00 – 3:00 PM PTA’s Welcome Back Carnival (first time since fall of 2019) in schoolyard
Looking forward to seeing you all there!!!
Sincerely,
William S. Kirk
Principal
